Welcome, dear reader, to our live coverage of the final battle in Nigeria’s quest to be in Equatorial Guinea in January to defend the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which they won last year in South Africa.
Standing between the Super Eagles and the realisation of that dream are the visiting Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
However, the African champions file out at the newly opened Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo with history on their side. The Super Eagles have not lost to Bafana Bafana in a competitive game and will be looking to extend that record in this all-important qualifier.
Both nations have met 10 times at full international stage with Nigeria winning seven times with two draws, while South Africa’s only win was in a friendly – the Mandela Challenge in 2004. The Eagles lost 2-1 with Ayodele Makinwa getting a consolation goal for Nigeria. Though already qualified for Equitorial Guinea 2015, South Africa are aiming to play the spoilers’ role but the Eagles are in a killer mood after reviving their qualification hopes with a 2-0 away win over Congo last Saturday in Pointe-Noire. The stage is set!
