NUJ President warns Buhari against worsening insecurity

The President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzor, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently overhaul the security architecture to tame the widespread insecurity of lives and property across the country.

The President gave the advice on Thursday, in Lokoja, at the grand finale of the Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists 2019 press week.

He reminded the government of their principal responsibility to ensure the safety of lives and property disclosed that the present trend in which people’s lives are being threatened by hoodlums masquerading as kidnappers, Armed Robbers, and herdsmen terrorising the people of the country as unacceptable.

He noted that unless drastic measures are being taken in earnest to arrest the ugly incidence, the Country may sooner than later be termed a failed state urged the president to rise to the occasion.

While calling on the practicing Journalists to be alive to their code of ethics by taking cognisance of objectivity, fairness and justice warned them not to fall into the trap of some mischievous sources whose intent is to mislead the readers for selfish gains.

Isiguzo who said he was happy with the spirit of cordial relationships that exists among members of Kogi Council urged them to dwell more on development stories that will move the state and the nation forward.

According to him, Journalists should not be in a hurry to publish stories that are not substantiated or not properly verified through many reliable sources to avoid falling fouls of the law of the land.

“We should bear in mind that we have no state and country that we can call our own. We should not use anger and malice to report issues. We should at all times report to stay alive hence, the safety of  our lives is of the essence.” He counsel.

Earlier, in a paper titled” Autonomy for Local Government, Judiciary and Legislature, implications for Nigeria Democracy, Mr. Joel Tope asked the APC led Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that autonomy becomes a reality to resolve perceived marginalization of the other tiers of Government.

He added that the recent autonomy to the LGAs through the NFIU guidelines to have legal backing by review the relevant sections of the country.

The lecturer frowns at the prevailing practices across the country where the Joint Accounts managed by the state governments on behalf of the Local Councils has emasculated the smooth running of administration at the local levels.

While calling on the youths not to allow themselves to be used by some misguided politicians to cause mayhem against their hapless colleagues urged them to engage in ventures that has bearing on their lives. (Independent)
