Cameroonian soldiers have killed 107 Boko Haram terrorists in fighting in the far north of Cameroon, the defence ministry said in a statement read today on state radio. Eight Cameroonian soldiers lost their lives in the fighting, the statement said.
Boko Haram has stepped up cross-border attacks into Cameroon this year as part of its campaign for a de facto Islamist state in northeastern Nigeria.
The sect has, however, increasingly lost ground to Nigerian troops in recent weeks, culminating in its decision to reach a ceasefire agreement with the Nigerian Government. Announced today by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, the ceasefire was reportedly vrokered by Chadian President Idris Deby after talks in Saudi Arabia involving Nigerian and Boko Haram officials witnessed by Cameroon.
