The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has warned newly elected local government chairmen and councillors in Edo State against acts of corruption.
Magu, who was represented by Mailafia Yakubu, Head of EFCC Benin Zonal Office, gave the warning today at the onboarding programme for newly elected chairmen and councillors in the state holding at Randekhi Hotels, Benin City.
Presenting a paper entitled, “What is Corruption?”, the EFCC boss observed that corruption represents Nigeria’s biggest problem and call for all hands to be on deck to tame the monster. “Corruption is the reason for our underdevelopment. It is the reason our hospitals are not functioning well. It is the reason our educational system are on the decline,” he stated.
Magu charged the newly elected council chairmen and councillors to embrace transparency and accountability as the EFCC will not spare anyone that is found wanting. “Let contentment be your guiding principle. We urge you to walk the straight and narrow part,” he said.
He further warned that even if there were no petitions against them, EFCC has special power to cause investigation to be conducted in the event that any of them is found to be enjoying lifestyles not supported by their known incomes.
