Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has condemned the exclusion of the South-East zone in the sharing of the principal offices of the 9th National Assembly.
The group described it as a political war against the zone. The President General of COSEYL, Chief Goodluck Ibem, said this in a statement issued yesterday.
Ikem said the action could be interpreted as a statement by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) that South-East was not part of Nigeria.
He said: “Actions, they say, speak louder than words. The decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) not to support or zone any principal position in the National Assembly to the South-East is a clear indication and statement by the APC that the South-East is not part of Nigeria.”
Ikem queried the rationale behind the decision.
“How can the North produce the Nigerian president, the Senate president, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the deputy speaker? The South-West produced the APC national leader, the vice president, the Speaker, House of Representatives. The South-South produced the national chairman, the deputy Senate president and the South-East zone is left with nothing,” he said.
Ikem called on the party to quickly redress the injustice and save Nigeria from imminent disintegration.
He added: “This is indeed an aberration and a travesty of the Nigerian Constitution. The APC has turned the constitution into a mere tissue paper used only when needed.
“The action of the APC against the South-East is wicked, barbaric and egocentric. Their action has shown that they are not qualified to be a national party.
“The actions of the APC against the South-East contradict the visions of our founding fathers who agreed and came together in harmony to work in unity as one united Nigeria.”
“We therefore call on President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC to retrace their steps and correct this anomaly and great injustice meted to the South-East geo-political zone.” (New Telegraph)
