The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Police Force in an update on Wednesday night confirmed the death of two persons following the collapse of a four-storey building in Onitsha, Anambra State, earlier in the day.

A statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Mohammed, said that three other persons were rescued alive.

The statement said: “On the 22/05/2019 at about 3p.m., a building under construction located at No 9 Ezenwa Street, Onitsha belonging to one Barr Ikebu Aso collapsed.

“Police patrol teams and other sister agencies rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area to checkmate miscreants and criminal elements from taking advantage of the situation to loot.”

The PPRO said that the three casualties whose identities are yet to be ascertained were rushed to the General Hospital, Onitsha, by the Red Cross for medical attention while two others were certified dead by the medical doctor and their corpses deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

He said: “The rescue Operation is still ongoing and case is under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.”
