Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, on Thursday congratulated the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, on his reappointment for another term in office.

In a congratulatory message issued in Asaba, by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Governor Okowa extolled the leadership qualities and astute contributions of Mr. Emefiele to the economic development of Nigeria since he was appointed in 2014.

He described Mr. Emefiele as an illustrious son of Delta State, whose remarkable contributions to the banking industry in Nigeria is legendary and worthy of emulation.

He said: “Mr. Emefiele is an illustrious son of Delta State in whom we are well pleased. His astute contributions to the development of the banking industry and the Nigeria economy is legendary and worthy of emulation”.

Governor Okowa noted that as a distinguished Deltan, Mr. Emefiele has had a remarkable but turbulent first term as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria where he successfully played a critical role to steer the Nigerian economy out of recession.

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I congratulate Mr. Godwin Emefiele on his reappointment for a second term as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

The Governor commended President Muhammadu Buhari for finding Mr. Emefiele worthy to be re-appointed.

“On behalf of myself, government and people of Delta State, I will like to sincerely thank Mr President for considering an illustrious citizen of Delta State worthy of occupying this important position of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria for a second term in office,” the statement added

In a related development, Governor Okowa, on Thursday, congratulated Mrs. Funke Egbemode on her re-election as the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) during the Guild’s 13th Annual Conference in Lagos.

Okowa, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, in Asaba also congratulated Vanguard Newspapers Editor, Mr. Eze Anaba, and other members of the newly-elected executive council of the NGE.

He noted that Egbemode had not only exceeded expectations since she took over the helm of the NGE, but had also taken the guild to greater heights.

Okowa said: “I have never doubted your ability to effectively lead the guild to the enviable heights you have taken it to, and i must thank your colleagues for rewarding your excellent performance in the last two years by unanimously returning you and some of your executive members unopposed.”

The Governor also called on the NGE “to join hands with other relevant stakeholders to ensure editorial independence and objectivity of the press at all times.”

He described Egbemode as a role model who has proved her mettle in the profession, adding that her recent re-election was well-deserving and an inspiration to other women striving to make a name in the profession.

“As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of insecurity and under development, it is therefore a challenge on the NGE, to ensure that editors continue to set agenda for good governance and development of the country through their editorial comments and feature writings,” the Governor said.

He further said with the astute support of her colleagues in the guild, he has no doubt that Mrs Egbemode will bring her wealth of experience to bear, not only in advancing the course of the guild, but also the journalism profession in general.
