A civil rights organisation, the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ), has called on the Nigeria Police to ensure an unbiased and thorough investigation into the alleged killing of 20-year-old Jessica Adaobi at the Ajegunle area of Lagos State by men of Trinity Police Unit under the Ajegunle Divisional Headquarters in the state.
In a press statement issued and signed by its Executive Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, the rights group said that the incident occurred barely few days after the burial of late Kolade Johnson who was murdered in a cold blood by the police stray bullet.
It revealed that the trigger happy Police officers committed the dastardly act on Saturday April 13, 2019 at around 7a.m., alleging that the Divisional Head of the Police Station was planning to sweep the unjustifiable killing under the carpet before the rights group got the information of the unlawful killing of innocent Nigerian through a good Samaritan who alerted it.
According to the group, it was also learnt that on the day of the incident, Jessica's partner, Emmanuel Akomafunwa, who was with the Late Jessica, was beaten to the state of coma whereby he sustained grave injuries all over his body.
The statement also said that when the rights group approached the Divisional Police Station for more details about the gruesome murder of Jessica, they confirmed the incident and stated that the Inspector, Dania Ojo, who led the team and his men that allegedly killed Adaobi were at large.
It noted that when other families were enjoying the Easter season, the Jessica Adobi family was thrown into irreparable grieve by the trigger happy men of the Nigeria Police Force.
Comrade Sulaiman described the killing of the young lady as serious execution that was beyond extra judicial killing, stressing that the elimination of our youths and tomorrow leaders by legalised men in uniforms, would not be condoned by the group and other well meaning Nigerians.
He said that the citizens of a country should be the foundation of the nation’s security by protecting them from internal and external aggression, hence, the issue of incessant killings of innocent Nigerians should not be taken with levity by the authorities concerned.
Similarly, it submitted that the group would call for mass action in the area of the incident if the Nigeria Police authority failed to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to justice within the possible time, insisting that the group would not rest on its oars until justice is done to the late Jessica Adaobi.
“We would not allow Late Jessica to die in vain and Police should ensure justice for her family within the shortest period of time in order to avoid the cacophony of noise with different locomotive legal agitation against the Nigeria Police Force from the different quarters.
“The security of life and property should have gone beyond carrying a gun around by the men of Nigeria police and it should also go beyond parading AK47 rifles around. The security should hinge on modern intelligence gathering mechanism with international best practices,” the rights buttressed.
