Chairman of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council and Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, has expressed dismay over alleged lackadaisical attitude to duty by health workers in some health centres in Anambra State.
Speaking on behalf of other traditional rulers when health workers paid them a courtesy visit in Awka, the state capital, the monarch regretted that on so many occasions when he stopped by some health centres to find out how the health workers were fairing, he mostly met no one on seat.
He said: “The rate at which health workers abandon their duty posts is regrettable.”
Igwe Achebe urged the workers to always live up to their jobs for the good of the people even as he asked them to intimate the council on their activities at the various health centres for improved healthcare delivery.
In his speech, the Acting Chairman, Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHDA), Dr. Emmanuel Okafor, said the agency would soon commence checks on all the health centres. He warned that anybody found wanting at their duty posts would be sanctioned.
He insisted that the state health workers have no reason to absent themselves from work going by government’s commitment toward them.
Okafor said the visit was to intimate the monarchs on the activities of the health centers.
While appealing for the employment of more health workers to replace the retiring ones, the Primary Health boss described as cordial the relationship between the state government and health workers.
