Barely seven days to the polls for the governorship and state assembly elections in the country, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Candidate for Nsukka East state constituency for the House of Assembly, Mr Omeje Ikpechukwu Evans, has raised the alarm, saying that his life is under serious threat in the hands of the incumbent House of Assembly member of the constituency, Hon. Chinedu Nwamba.

Omeje, who spoke to journalists, alleged that Hon. Nwamba, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the constituency, allegedly hired thugs to dislodge his teeming supporters at Eke Ochee market square in Ede Oballa of Nsukka Local Government Area,  Enugu State, and thereafter proceed to his house opposite the market to allegedly attack him before the election.

He said that he was alerted on phone over the alleged development while he took to his heels and called the Area commander of Nsukka police command who immediately dispatched a team of policemen who arrived the scene, while the alleged hired thugs were shooting sporadically to scare away passersby and APC supporters and scampered for safety.

“APC is the major challenger to the incumbent House of Assembly of the constituency. and this is the more reason why he is doing everything possible to frustrate my candidacy, to have his way back to the House, having been there for the past eight years,” he said.

Omeje appealed to security agencies to come to his aide and save his life before the next Saturday elections in the country, urging his constitueny members to vote according to their choice, irrespective of party affiliation.

“I have alerted the police, Department of State Services (DSS) and other sister agencies that my life is under threat by the PDP candidate for Nsukka East state constituency in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state and equally raised a petition to that effect should anything happen to me before and after the election,” he noted.

Reacting to the alleged threat to life, Hon. Nwamba said that the APC candidate is seeking unnecessary attention, crying wolf where none exists and playing politics of bitterness and hatred.

Nwamba, who spoke to journalists on Friday via phone, said that it was shocking to hear that he hired thugs to chase around the APC candidate for the State Assembly election next Saturday, explaining that he went for a burial at Ede Oballa community and after the burial, came out to the market square, bought drinks for cyclists and Keke NAPEP operators around the place who were hailing him for victory.

He said: “Omeje who accused me of threat to life, called me on phone to assist him to contest for House of Assembly under APC. I obliged his request and sent money to him to obtain the APC nomination form and wished him well for his ambition. People have been calling my attention to what he posted on Facebook that I am a threat to his life.

“Stories of his atrocious acts are bound in the entire constituency; he insults elders of the constituency and posts same on Facebook.  How can a sane man play politics of hate and anger at the modern society?”

Nwamba said he would not want to join issues with the APC candidate, describing him as attention seeker and first-timer in politics, adding that youths of Ede Oballa were hailing him and he settled down to entertain them when suddenly police arrived to enquire what was wrong in the area.

“I was lucky enough to still be around when the police arrived, either the story would have been that I came with thugs and sneaked away while the boys wreak havoc. The APC candidate lied just to create unnecessary tension, attacking a serving commissioner in the state who is his cousin and many others in the constituency.

“His allegations of threat to life is false, unfounded, baseless and of no effect, while I challenge him to prove it beyond all reasonable doubts,” he said.
