Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Peter Obi, on Sunday dispelled rumours that some leaders of the party in the zone were working against the success of the party in the forthcoming February 16 presidential election.
Addressing party faithful in Awka during an interdenominational service and reception organised for him by the party in the state, Obi maintained that the leadership of the party in the regions and all the members were working together as one family for a common course.
He said: “Let me tell you all, PDP in the South-East is working as one family, and when the votes are turned in, you will all see it. We are working as one family.”
The VP hopeful promised that as Vice President, he would ensure that major roads in the South-East were completed as against the propaganda being peddled by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
Obi observed that Nigerians have been subjected to untold hardship under the APC government.
Earlier in his sermon, the Anglican Bishop of Awka Diocese, Bishop Alex Ibezim, said that only servant-leaders can save Nigeria from collapse.
He said: “Our country needs servant-leaders, leaders who will serve selflessly.
“We lack leaders like Nehemiah (in the Bible). Nehemiah served in the king’s palace, but didn’t receive emolument for the work he did. We need leaders like Nehemiah. Nehemiahs are fast disappearing in Nigeria. We must pray for God to give us God-fearing leaders through this election.
“Nehemiah was comfortable in the king’s palace, but he was more concerned about the welfare of the people of Jerusalem. Nigeria is characterised by war, hunger, and all manner of afflictions. All politicians here must know that and work to redeem the country.”
Priests took the opportunity to bless and pray for Obi and his wife, Margaret, against any form of attacks that may come their way.
The event was used to present PDP flags to new entrants, which included Godwin Ezeemo, Hygers Igwebuike and Yul Edochie, who were accompanied by many supporters.
The event was attended by big wigs of the party in the state such as the former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Ben Obi; Dr. Alex Obiogbolu; Senatorial and House of Representatives candidates of the party, among others.
