Gabros International Football Club of Nnewi has made a bold move to escape from the clutches of relegation and power on to the Glo Premiership League with a resounding 3-0 defeat of visiting Unicem FC of Calabar.
The match which was played on Thursday, July 17, at the Gabros Mini Stadium in Nnewi, saw the visitors being slammed with the opening goal by attacking midfielder Chukwudi Stephen in the 14th minute of play.
Gabros increased the tally in the 21st minute when Stephen Nwiwu from outside the 18-yard box dribbled his way through and hit the net with a beautiful rocket shot.
At this stage, the jubilant home fans couldn’t help but start chanting “Anyi ejebego” – meaning “we are going” (to the Premiership).
On resumption of play for the second half, the visitors exhibited much eagerness to reduce the score line but that was not to be as Gabros boys warded off any calamity.
Though the heavens opened up with showers of rain at the beginning of the second half, the downpour did not deter the home boys from further increasing the tally in the last three minutes with another swift score by two-goal hero Chukwudi Stephen.
Speaking with News Express at the end of the match, a visibly excited owner of Gabros International FC, Mr. Gabriel Chukwuma, said that the kind of play displayed by the boys shows their eagerness to climb the ladder of success.
He said: “I’m not only happy at my boys’ display, we played well and won. You could see for yourself, they played better than the visiting team throughout the match. I hail the boys for making me proud and also the coach for doing his homework well. The officiating was good, too. With their display today, I’m optimistic we shall get to the Premiership level soon.”
“You also saw the display of the No. 14 shirt, Chukwudi Stephen, the last scorer, that’s our spirit here in this team and you cannot get his type anywhere else.”
