A support group working for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has pledged to work with like-minds to end a one-man rule in Lagos state.
The group of Youth, Entrepreneurs and Students under the aegis of The YES ATIKU 2019 in a statement by its Lagos Deputy coordinator Babatunde Idowu and Publicity Secretary, Godwin Akangbe said only the PDP candidate, Jimi Agbaje can put an end to godfatherism in Lagos state.
According to the group, Agbaje is the only candidate who can end vested interest and godfatherism in Lagos State.
The statement said, “The people of Lagos State are tired and ready to free themselves from the tyrannical hold by an individual who is running the affairs of Lagos State.
“He picks whoever must rule in Lagos State, promoting personal family interest, neglecting the people who voted for them, building personal empire. The will of the people does not matter.
“One man seems to be the only godfather, chief landlord while the rest are tenants even though we are bonafide citizen and resident of Lagos State.
“Instead of talking about the records of politicians and judging them by their achievements, we are talking about the will of godfather as yardstick for who takes up the mantle of leadership.
“Lagos does not belong to any one man. It belongs to all who dwell in it. We all should be able to decide who we want to lead us. It should be everybody’s choice. The issue that has dominated electioneering in Lagos State since 20 years ago has been the power of political godfather to successfully handpick their stooges who would be anointed to run for one political office or other.
“The self-centered interest of this godfather becomes primary and the welfare and wellbeing of the people becomes secondary. The godfather corner all the juicy contracts to fix the infrastructure and can as well deliver poor jobs or no jobs at all, even as their stooges holding political office lack the will power to demand accountability. The people are made to behave like a mere spectators even whilst their Commonwealth are shared by opportunists”.
