The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of sponsoring the crisis currently rocking the state House of Assembly.
The assembly which is mostly dominated by the ruling party in the state (APGA) on November 14 rocked their united front as the Speaker, Hon. Rita Maduagwu, was impeached by some lawmakers.
The failed impeachment attempt was led by the member representing Aguata 11 constituency, Hon Ikem Uzoezie.
The underlying target of the crisis, News Express gathered, is aimed at sidelining lawmakers loyal to the State Governor, Willie Obiano, and entrench a group that is not so loyal to him so as to have an easy transition to impeach him.
However, the ensuing crisis that unfolded the day the factional Speaker, Uzoezie made to enter the assembly complex with his group for a plenary session led to sealing of the complex by the state police command.
Uzoezie had in a press conference condemned the sealing of the complex calling on the Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, to call the state Command to order to allow them carry on with their job of legislating.
The recent romance between Obiano and the Federal gGovernment has further created fears in some quarters that the governor may be working to scuttle the interest of PDP in next year's presidential election, especially as his relationship with his predecessor who is the running mate of PDP flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar, has hit the rock.
Though APGA has a presidential candidate, feelers have it that it is only a smoke screen as the governor’s loyalty is tilting towards the incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari, who is of APC.
News Express learnt that the gesture is a way of appreciating the president for not interfering in 2017 Governorship election in the state even when the party had a candidate in Tony Nwoye.
A Chieftain of APGA who spoke on condition of anonymity said that before the Assembly crisis, different interest groups had perfected strategies to unseat the governor.
He said that some members of the group also capitalised on the APGA controversial primaries to seek the support of aggrieved aspirants of the party.
His words: “Someone close to the new leadership in the Assembly revealed that the plot to unseat Governor Obiano was to commence last Tuesday, November 20, 2018. It was shifted to take place two days later when the Assembly reconvened.”
Reacting to statement, the state Chairman of PDP, Chief Ndubisi Nwobu, expressed shock that APGA could finger his party for a crisis that is self-inflicted.
He condemned the sealing of the assembly complex by the police and asked APGA to sieve its problems internally and leave the PDP out of it.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, on his part, insisted that the police action was a proactive measure to check possible breach of public peace.
