President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday directed relevant agencies to study the report of the Senior Executive Course 40 of the National Institute for Strategic Studies (NIPSS) on security.

The president gave the directive at the State House, Abuja after receiving the report from participants of the course led by the Acting Director-General of the institute, Jonathan Juma.

Buhari had last year tasked the management of NIPSS with the responsibility of strengthening the nation’s internal security framework through community policing by proposing borders, policy, offence and strategy.

“I’m pleased that the participants under the leadership of the management and faculty of the national institute took their task very seriously. Your report is coming at a time when we are changing the national security strategy by placing much emphasis on the well-being of Nigerians.

“I’m using this occasion to direct relevant government agencies to carefully study the report with a view to implementing its recommendations,” he said.

He said the decision of the government to mandate NIPSS was borne out of sincere desire to find sustainable solutions to the many security challenges inherited by this administration.

Earlier in his address, the acting Director General of the Institute, said in the course of the assignment, the participants visited 12 states, six countries in Africa and six outside Africa with a view to obtaining a clearer perspective of internal security issues with particular relevance to community policing.

Juma appealed to President Buhari to intervene in fast tracking the process of amendment of the law establishing the institute, enacted four decades ago.

Appealing for upward review of the institute’s budget, he called for the inclusion of NIPS in the special window of funding available in the Tertiary Education Fund (TETFund).
