Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has made history as the first serving high government official in Nigeria to register for a professional football club.
Yesterday (Wednesday, November 7, 2018) Shaibu, 48, made another history when he became the oldest known footballer to play in a pro-league match in the country. The naturally gifted footballer came on in the second half for the Edo Government-owned Insurance FC in their 1-1 away draw against Spartans of Lagos in a rescheduled Nigerian Nationwide League (NNL) match.
News Express reports that there was excitement at the stadium and in the dressing room as the Deputy Governor sat respectfully with other players and took instructions from the coach. He later went through all pre-match warm up routine like any other player and showed flashes of brilliance when he came on the pitch.
