Nigeria’s ninth Head of State, Chief Ernest Shonekan, has been reported dead.

He was aged 82.

His death, reported on Tuesday evening by some social media platforms, has yet to be confirmed.

A British-trained Nigerian lawyer, industrialist, politician and traditional chieftain, Chief Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan was appointed interim Head of State by a hurriedly-departing Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, on August 26, 1993. His reign was, however, cut short by late dictator, General Sani Abacha, who seized power on November  17, 1993.
