The fate of embattled governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, and his deputy, Bala Ngilari, seems to have become sealed after the State House of Assembly this morning voted to impeach them.

This vindicates News Express, which had on May 28 reported that the impeachment axe was dangling over Governor Nyako.

Already, Ngilari has been served with impeachment notice, according to information from the state capital, Yola.

“There seems to be no escape route in view of the enormity of the allegations against them,” a reliable source told News Express.

The Save Adamawa State Movement has described the development as “very much welcome,” saying that it is long overdue.

The House of Assembly had o may 27 asked the Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Ibrahim Buba Vokna, and the Accountant General of the state, Alhaji Mohammed Nasir, to immediately submit the statutory allocations particulars for April and May to the House.

The House said the state government, through the two principal officials should ensure that the deductions made from the workers’ salaries were paid on or before Friday, May 30, 2014. Failure to comply with the directive, the lawmakers would regard the action of government as contempt of the House.

The two officials were also directed to submit to the Assembly expenditures for the two months with immediate effect without which their actions would be regarded as contempt of the House.

The directives were contained in a five-point resolution passed by the House yesterday, which also asked the two officers to submit bank statements in respect of the April and May disbursements.

In the same vein, the House ordered that government should refund over N142 million allegedly deducted unlawfully from workers’ salaries and allowances in May. It noted that the deductions were carried out without negotiations with workers and other relevant bodies.

The legislators also resolved that workers’ salaries withheld for the months of August and September 2012 should be paid to them within two weeks of the resolutions of the House or be regarded also as contempt.

The resolutions were sequel to the summoning of the two principal officials before the House to defend their actions on the deductions made from the workers’ salaries for May as well as the failure of government to pay the backlog of 19 months salaries of newly employed teachers.

The action of the lawmakers is widely believed to be a prelude by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-dominated House to impeach Governor Murtala Nyako, who drew the battle-line with the PDP-led Federal Government after decamping to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) last November.

Reports from Adamawa say that northern governors had waded in with a view to saving Nyako’s job, with the governors of Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Sokoto State, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, as mediators. Their efforts appear to have been fruitless.
