•Anambra Children and Women Affairs Commissioner, Lady Ndidi Mezue

A mentally deranged woman occupying a spot under the flyover bridge at Arroma Junction, Awka, the Anambra State capital, has been caught with tens of thousands of naira by the officials of the Ministry of Children and Women Affairs led by the Commissioner, Lady Ndidi Mezue.

Addressing journalists after the discovery, the Commissioner said that the state Governor, Willie Obiano mandated the Ministry to relocate and rehabilitate mentally challenged people from across the state by sending them to the Home for Mentally Challenged Persons located at Nteje, Oyi Local government Area of the state for their rehabilitation.

The Commissioner explained that they discovered the huge sum of money after picking the woman under the flyover while conducting their routine exercise.

She said that upon interrogation, the mentally deranged woman who could barely talk gave her name as Abike from Lagos State and revealed that her uncle dropped her under the flyover some time ago with the huge amount of money and left.

Mezue regretted that most of the mentally challenged people roaming the state are not from Anambra State and assured that they will reunite the woman with her family when certified mentally stable by the medical experts at the Nteje Home for mentally challenged persons.

She commended Governor Obiano and his wife for their various interventions towards helping the vulnerable, less privileged and mentally challenged persons in the state. However, a passerby who pleaded anonymity said that he had been observing the woman and wondering if she is really mentally deranged because of her level of neatness despite her situation.

His words: “She usually buys food for herself each time she is hungry and sweeps her space regularly.”

He said that rumours have it that men sneak into her shack at night to have carnal knowledge of her.

News Express gathered that the total amount of money recovered from her was N200,000.
