Breaking: UNILAG shut as students protest fee hike

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been hurriedly shut to prevent damage to school property by students protesting a hike in fees.

The school management announced the closure after aggrieved students blocked entrances to the school this morning, preventing vehicular movements in or outside of the campus at Akoka Yaba.

The students are protesting against the sudden imposition of course registration fee. They are angry that university management shut the school portal against registration and began demanding for N10,000, which again increased to N15,000 and N20,000 progressively in the last few days.

A UNILAG student told News Express: “My lectures scheduled for today didn’t hold. UNILAG Gate is shut; no entry or exit for vehicles. No cabs. I had trekked to and from my department.”

News Express reports that students of the state-government-owned Lagos State University (LASU) are also continuing their protests over astronomical increase in school fees.
