Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday, begged for the support of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegates in Anambra State, saying that with him as a President, the regions will not only be developed, but Nigeria will be a better place.
He noted that Nigeria has become more divided, following the election of a government that is completely insensitive to the diversity and welfare of the nation.
The presidential candidate who was in Awka, Anambra State capital, to seek vote of party's state delegates in the forthcoming party primaries, regretted that Nigeria presently records the highest rate of unemployment in history.
He said: “We elected a government that crashed Nigeria into recession from an economy that was growing at 6 per cent GDP, and up till now, we are trying to recover from the recession.
“Today, we have the highest unemployment rate in our history. Today, our health sector is performing very minimal. Nigeria is at the bottom as far as the health sector is concerned.
“We are more divided as a country today simply because we mistakenly elected a president who succeeded in dividing us more. I saw the pre-civil war days, the civil war days, and post-civil war days, but I have never seen Nigeria so divided as it is today.”
While stressing that almost all African country is ahead if Nigeria, Atiku who was received by a stirring crowd of party faithful and supporters regretted that Nigeria is doing almost worse in every socio-economic indicator.
He added: “This is a government we must vote out next year. I beg of you all. It is not about me but about the future of our children, we must unite to make sure we don't vote for APC anymore.
“I want to beg you to give me that opportunity and to give me opportunity is to let me have the ticket. I urge you to join hands with me so that we can develop our regions and reclaim our country again.”
On the issue of restructuring, the former Vice President claimed that he had championed the course for years insisting that the country must give every part the privilege of governing itself and in so doing, develop at its pace.
He expressed displeasure that for people from the southeast region to travel out if the country, they must go through Lagos or Abuja, even when an international airport is supposed to be sited in the zone.
“We must not continue to have a country where every state rushes to Abuja to pick money to develop their states,” Atiku stated.
He further promised to build a quality international airport in the southeast that would have flights to all parts of the world if elected president.
Earlier in his speech, the State Chairman of PDP, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, assured the presidential aspirant of the support of the state.
He urged him not to forget his promises when he mounts the mantle of leadership.
