Senator Suleiman Uthman Hunkuyi, who represents Kaduna North Senatorial District has formally joined the governorship race in the state.
Hunkuyi, who recently joined the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), made the formal declaration on Friday at a town hall meeting with leaders and stakeholders of the party from 11 local governments areas in Unguwan Wakili, Zangon Kataf Local Government.
The senator has had a running battle with Governor Ahmed Nasir el-Rufai before he left the APC to the PDP.
A statement from the senator’s media office quoted him as saying the people of Kaduna State must rise up to the occasion as “it is time to kill this change in Kaduna State.”
The senator is expected to, any time soon, pick the PDP’s nomination and expression of interest forms for the governorship primaries of the party.
The senator said his resolve to vie for the governorship office was based on the people’s desire to chart a new direction for the state.
The statement said the PDP leaders and stakeholders present at the meeting resolved to support the senator in his aspiration to govern the state.
They equally resolved to ensure that the PDP defeats the ruling APC in next year’s governorship election in the state.
