The Anambra State police command has paraded a fifty years old man, Mr. Nonyelum Okakwu, together with his 13-year-old son, Chimezie Nwaeforu, for alleged child theft in Okoti, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
Addressing journalists at the state command in Amawbia, Awka south local government area of the state, the state Police Commissioner Garba Umar said two of the stolen children were abducted during a graduation ceremony at The Light International School at Okoti.
He said the children, aged between three and six were found at the suspect’s house during a search by detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID).
According to him, one Chimezue Nwaefuru abducted a three-year-old baby, Chisimdi Udetore, and took him to his fifty year father, Nonyelum Okakwu.
His words: “He usually sends him to steal children with his bicycle, which he purposely bought for him to lure children.
“Investigation revealed that the syndicate had turned child-stealing into a family business involving virtually all members of the same family.”
While saying the rescued children had been taken to motherless babies home for safe custody, the commissioner said that a manhunt for the fourth suspect was already underway.
He called on parents whose children were missing to report at the State CID in Awka for identification adding that the command will continue to serve and protect all citizens with integrity and in accordance with internationally accepted best practices.
