NUASS shuts down Awka during maiden cultural fiesta

The National Union of Anambra State Students Nationwide (NUASS) led by Comr Echegwo Chibunna Godwin shut down Awka on Saturday, August 11, 2018, as she celebrated her first ever cultural fiesta.

The Cultural Fiesta was reportedly brought into Awka by over 10,000 Ndi Anambra students schooling across the federation to celebrate the rich Igbo cultural heritage.

The atmosphere of the venue was superb as the students, led by the Chapter Presidents, Ndi Nze na Ozo and Lolos from their various institutions, dressed in their cultural attires. The great Ikiro continued to boom as the sun smiled on the students; the traditional musical instruments gave melodious sounds charging the atmosphere for dance and jubilation, while alot of masquerades, accompanied by traditional dancers and music, displayed.

To add more colour to the event, the leadership of NUASS Nationwide was able to pull great and illustrious sons to the venue, the presence of these men added brilliance and majesty to the event.

In attendance was the State Governor, Chief Dr Willie Obiano, represented by the Senior Special Assistant on Youth Development and Digital Entrepreneurship, Hon. Ifeanyi Aniagoh.

The Great Lion of Africa, Prof Dr Godwin Maduka, Chief Sir Senator Victor Umeh (OFR) was also represented by his Campaign D.G., Prince Uche Oduche; also graced the occasion with his presence is The traditional ruler of Ogidi Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Pharm Alex Uzo Onyido, Ezechuamagha 1 of Ogidi attended the occasion in full pump and pageantry, the former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Sir Maja Emeka Umeh, was also present in the further, His Royal Highness Prophet Dr Ramas Okoye Asuzu, Eze Ofo Igbo na Nri kingdom was present.

Equally in attendance was His Majesty Igwe P.N. Anukwu (Ezeukwu Mbaukwu), and a host of others including politicians, government appointees like commissioners, special advisers to the governor and senior special assistants.

NUASS National President, Comr. Echegwo Chibunna Godwin, in his welcome address, saluted the efforts of Governor Obiano and further reminded the Governor that the students of Anambra State do not receive bursary from the state government, and this has placed limitations to the length by which some students, who could not afford school fees could go in life. He pleaded with the Governor to commence the payment of the bursaries to the students.

Emphasising on the academic and technological breakthroughs recorded by several Anambra students around the globe, most especially the five girls who won gold medals in an International competition in America, the National President called on the entire well to do Ndi Anambra to invest more on scholarships for the students.

One of the highlights of the fiesta was the launch of N18 million NUASS bus appeal fund which was donated to the union by Prof Dr Godwin Maduka.

The event also witnessed the unveiling and presentation of NUASS magazine.

Anambra students also used the opportunity to confer Honorary Awards to some distinguished sons of the state, among them Governor Obiano, who was recognised as the Best Student-Friendly Governor and honoured with Grand Service Star, National Union of
