Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who was recently appointed as an Advisory Board member of the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund (UNRSTF), is currently representing Nigeria and Africa, at the inaugural meeting of the Board at the UN Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland.

The UNRSTF was established in April 2018 to address the worldwide accident crisis resulting in 1.3 million lives lost and an additional 50 million injured on the road each year.

As a member of the UNRSTF Advisory Board, Amaechi will play an important part in collaborating on reducing the number of accidents and casualties; and making a real impact on global road safety.

The discussions and decisions at the meeting will greatly shape the operationalisation of the United Nations Road Safety Trust fund.

The United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund was established at the request of the UN Secretary-General, following suggestions made by several United Nations Member States.

It aims to accelerate progress in improving global road safety by bridging the gap in the mobilisation of resources for effective action at all levels.

The fund’s main objective is to mobilise resources from government, intergovernmental or non-governmental organisations and the private sector for immediate and effective action in any case.

Since Amaechi resumed office in November, 2015 as Minister of Transportation, there has been a renaissance in the Nigerian Transportation system. And his involvement in the UNRSTF will bring about more intervention in the area of road safety in Nigeria and Africa.

The meeting held on Thursday, August 9, 2018, at Palais des Nation in Geneva, Switzerland.
