An Enugu-based philanthropist, Chief Ejikeme Odumegwu, yesterday, revealed that he has renovated 17 police stations across Enugu state in the past one year.

Odumegwu disclosed this to newsmen at the end of state’s Police-Community Relations Committee (PCRC) meeting, where he also donated 100 bags of cement for the PCRC Ultra-Modern Building Project at the Police Headquarters in Enugu.

He promised to deploy resources to the renovation of 47 police stations in the state, noting that he wanted to leave a legacy in security sector of the country.

Odumegwu, a real estate merchant, emphasised that security should be every body’s business because, without security, business and economic investments would not flourish.

He stressed that there should be a strong collaboration between members of the public and the security agencies especially the police.

On his motivation, he said all well-meaning Nigerians who appreciate the importance of security, must assist the present Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, to succeed ‘because to police a populous nation like Nigeria is not a tea party’.

“But it is very interesting that we join hands with the police if we really know what security means in our lives; we must join hands with the police to give them the enabling environment.

“And with that enabling environment, we can now challenge or question them when they go into misconduct. So, I am still ready to do more, if God provides the resources,” Odumegwu said.

According to him, there are areas where he is building new police station or posts; like now, I just finished building one police station in Ette in Igboeze North Local Government Area.

“My projects are still on-going. My promise is to renovate the whole police stations we have in Enugu State.

“At present, I am handling the renovation of building at the police headquarters where the Commissioner of Police stays; I have already chosen to do this type of work and that is my token contribution to the development of security in Enugu State and Nigeria,” he said.

Odumegwu, also Special Assistant to Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state on Mobilisation, noted that “if the police is to go on strike for one day, you and l cannot come out.”

“If a counsellor should be given a new brand car with functional air-conditioner, and earns about N100,000 per month; think about it yourself, how much does a policeman earn and few facilities that are attached to his or her office,” he said.
