The Chairperson, Bayelsa State Teachers Training, Registration and Certification Board, Dr. (Mrs.) Stella Peremoboere Ugolo, has appreciated the initiative of the State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, in establishing the board. She assured that henceforth, those that will serve as teachers in the state primary and secondary schools are to successfully undergo a Programme of Continuous Professional Development every three years to be certified as competent to teach. She said this shortly after the screening of the Board members by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly in Yenagoa.
Dr. Ugolo disclosed that the programme would be compulsory for serving, redeployed and newly employed teachers in the state.
Ugolo said what the Government want to achieve is improved teacher competence and quality. “The programme will be beneficial to all teachers because even the teachers that are good and intelligent still need continuous training and retraining to be abreast with new teaching skills and content, while those that lack capacity will also have opportunity to improve so that they can sufficiently transmit the learning curriculum to students and pupils as learning is a continuous phenomenon.
“So the objective is to update the knowledge base of our teachers to further improve the standard of Education in our state, this being the overriding factor for the establishment of the board and the driving force for my zeal and passion for real and sustained educational development,” she said.
Dr. Ugolo emphasized that when teachers become efficient, the students will be able to learn and perform better so that they can compete with their peers anywhere in the world.
Earlier at the floor of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, the Speaker, Mr. Konbowei Benson, had urged members of the Board, to carry out the mandate of the board in line with the philosophy of the Restoration Government.
