A Nigerian soldier shot along with two others in a case of mistaken identity has died in hospital. The unnamed soldiers were shot by soldiers at a checkpoint in Damagum town of Yobe State in Nigeria’s troubled North-East infested by Boko haram terrorist group.

A report in Nigerian Pilot Sunday said the soldiers “opened fire at a vehicle conveying corpses when it lost one of its tyres, shooting three of the soldiers in it.”

“Few hours when the wounded soldiers were conveyed to the hospital in Potiskum, few kilometers away from the town for treatment, one of the soldiers passed away as he could not make it,” the report added.

It quoted eye witnesses in Damagum as saying that the incident happened around 12:30 p.m. today.

According to the witnesses, the vehicle carrying the corpses was coming from Damaturu and going to Potiskum “and it seems the soldiers were from Maiduguri in Borno State.

“Nobody knows yet, but they were suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents when the tyre busted.

“The soldiers at the checkpoint were thinking it was a bomb explosion from the vehicle.”
