The Anambra State Police Command has called on residents of the state to ignore rumours making the rounds that Fulani herdsmen are planning an attack in the state.
This came on the heels of an alleged attack on one of the cattle rearers at the Agu-Awka area of Awka, Anambra state capital. The said herdsman was allegedly attacked by unknown men.
According to a source in the Agu-Awka, the rumour has sparked fear among residents in the area, leading to their fleeing the area while those who had businesses had relocated their families out of fear.
However, in a statement made available to journalists by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, he assured residents of the area and the state at large of their safety.
The statement reads in part: “The attention of the Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to a publication going round in the social media that herdsmen are planning a reprisal attack over the incident that occurred on the 13/5/2018 at Agu in Awka South LGA of Anambra State where a Cattle rearer sustained injury due to attack by yet to be identified persons.
“The publication is definitely a figment of the imagination of mischief makers. It is probably orchestrated by those elements who are not happy with the prevailing peace in the state which the Law enforcement agencies in collaboration with well-meaning individuals are working assiduously to maintain.”
Haruna reiterated that the state enjoys a harmonious relationship between farmers and herdsmen as any issue that arises is resolved amicably through an existing channel laid down by the State Government. He added that the channels include the law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders.
The PPRO urged members of the public to disregard the rumour and go about their lawful businesses as the command is fully committed towards protection of lives of the inhabitants of the state.
