The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has declared that the council poll slated for May 12 will hold as scheduled in spite of the pronouncement of the Federal High Court in Ibadan halting it.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan by Mr Cosmos Oni, the spokesman of the commission assured all political parties involved in the electoral process that the poll would hold.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the court on Wednesday upheld the request of some aggrieved members of the All Progressives Party (APC) in Ibarapa East Local Government to stop the conduct of the election.
The petitioners had approached the court to stop the conduct of the poll pending the determination of the case they filed before the court.
Their grievance was over what they called the unsatisfactory way the party organised the primaries for the nomination of flag bearers for the council poll.
”OYSIEC wishes to assure members of the public and all political parties that the court pronouncement will not, according to Oyo State Independent Electoral Law, affect the conduct of the council poll.
”The forthcoming local government election into 33 Local Government Councils and 35 Local Council Development areas of the state will hold as scheduled on May 12 ,2018,” Oni, however, said in the statement. (NAN)
