The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission Mr. Hakeem Dickson, has said that most gas plants in Lagos need to be redesigned to meet the expected safety standards and reduce the rate of colossal loss of lives and property.
Dickson spoke on Monday while briefing the press about the report of an 11-man investigative team set up by the Safety Commission to investigate the fire accident that occurred recently at Second Coming Gas Plant in Magodo. He said that the clamour for the use of Domestic Gas has led to the proliferation of gas stations and vendors all over the state.
He emphasised the need for strict compliance with safety standards before the establishment of any gas plant from the design stage, adding that the State Government will not compromise on the safety of lives and assets in the state.
The 11-man team comprising officials of the Lagos State Safety Commission, members of the Nigeria Institute of Safety Engineers, experts in Forensics, Fire and LPG experts was set up on the 23rd of January, 2018 and has submitted an interim report to the Director-General of the Commission.
The investigative team had as its terms of reference: to find out the root cause of the incident and to make recommendations for effective safety management of gas plants in the state.
Dickson promised that the Commission will study the report and ensure effective follow-up and compliance with the recommendations, adding that the State Government will not compromise on the safety of lives and property. (lagosstate.gov.ng)
