President Muhammadu’s only son, Yusuf Buhari, had to be immediately put on “mechanical support” to prevent him from dying after he was rushed to Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, following Wednesday’s power bike accident in the Nigerian capital, a source familiar with the situation has revealed.
A report by DAILY NIGERIAN, which yesterday morning broke the story of Yusuf’s accident, said that he was brought to the hospital with severe head injury.
It quoted the source as saying that the President’s son suffered a severe head injury and femoral fracture after the ghastly bike crash around Gwarimpa area of the capital city.
According to the source, Yusuf’s level of consciousness was 5 in the scale of 15, the report said.
It also quoted the source as citing research that shows that if the best scale is 3 to 4 after 24 hours, 87% of those individuals will either die or remain in a vegetative state and only 7% will have a moderate disability or good recovery.
“In patients with a scale from 5 to 7.53% will die or remain in a vegetative state, while 34% will have a moderate disability or good recovery.
“In patients with a scale of 8 to 10.27% will die or remain in a coma, while 68% will have a moderate disability and/or good recovery. In patients who have a scale from 11 to 15, only 7% will be expected to die or remain in a coma, while 87% would expect to have at least a moderate disability and/or good recovery,” the source added.
The Presidency this morning dismissed an online report (not by News Express) that Yusuf had been flown abroad for more medical attention. A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report quoted Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, as saying in a text message that Yusuf was still being treated at a private hospital in Abuja.
Shehu had on Wednesday afternoon confirmed the accident via a short statement that read: “Yusuf Buhari had a bike accident last night around Gwarimpa in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
“He broke a limb and had an injury to the head as a result. He has undergone surgery at a clinic in Abuja. He is in a stable condition.
“The President and his wife, Mrs Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, are thankful to Nigerians for the good wishes and prayers for their son.
“May God reward you all.”
