Barely 24 hours after he was suspended as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by President Goodluck Jonathan, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has become the target of Nigeria’s leading opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This evening, Sanusi, whose tenure at the CBN ends this June, held a secret meeting with two APC chieftains, namely, Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.
The meeting was held behind closed doors at the elitist Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island in Nigeria’s former capital, Lagos.
Sanusi had months ago said he would retire into teaching but indications are that he may opt for politics instead and join APC, where his bosom friend, ex-Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, is the Interim Deputy National Secretary.
It is not clear what carrot APC is dangling before the suspended CBN Governor but News Express learnt that he is being considered a potential presidential candidate by the party for the 2015 election in which President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is expected to seek re-election.
