The 2017 Anambra State governorship election, which climaxed on Sunday with incumbent Governor Willie Obiano towering high with a wide margin, has indeed proved the people’s desire for All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) government continuity.
Obiano’s re-election, though expected by many political analysts, came as a result of many factors.
Top on the factors is security, which has remained a sing-song on the mouth of Anambrarians.
Since Obiano took over the mantle of leadership in the state, he has changed the security dynamics through the provision of more security vehicles to the Police.
He also employed the use of quarterly helicopter surveillance, which has helped to keep criminals away.
Also, during the heat of the Fulani herdsmen saga, the Governor employed a civil tactics of dialogue by meeting with the leaders of the Hausa community in the state to collaborate with them.
He went further to settle the dispute between some cattle rearers and the people of Umungbo community in Ayamelum Local Government Area when some of their cattle were killed.
He made sure the community paid back the money the cows were worth.
Another factor to his victory is the incumbency advantage. With that, he wields the totality of the power needed for the political jungle war in the election ring. This arsenal included security, money, influence, and foot soldiers, among others.
There is also the issue of the former governor, Peter Obi's perceived enemies nursing anger against him and waiting for the opportunity to carry out their vendetta.
This crop of people with huge political clout has a way of influencing the political reading of Anambra State's map, hence the direction they go has a way of determining the final turn-out.
In their bid to ensure Obi doesn't succeed in his plot to install the PDP candidate, Oseloka Obaze, the people teamed up against Obi by joining their armour with the incumbent Governor's to scuttle their effort.
To them, Obi was staging a third term through the installation of Obaze, hence, in Obaze, they see a Peter Obi governorship.
There is the sympathy angle in favour of Obiano, which came as a result of a perceived gang up against him.
Majority of Anambrarians are of the view that Obi’s open campaign for Obaze was majorly to slight Obiano, and, in so doing masage his ego that he is the only man that has done second term in the state.
In driving for Obaze’s emergence, he painted himself as a godfather which Anambrarians are no longer open to accept and willing to accept following the experiences of the past.
