A lawmaker in Nigeria’s house of Representative has revealed that 19 students and staff of the University of Maiduguri were killed in separate attacks this year.

The university has been attacked at least six times by the Boko Haram sect.

The first attack was in January with the latest in July.

In his motion, Mohammed Monguno is asking the Nigerian Government to deploy a team of security officials from all security agencies including the Department of State services to protect the school.

He is also opposing a proposed closure of the university.

The motion was supported by members of the House.

The lawmakers are asking security agencies, particularly the military, the police and the Department of State Services, to “submit a comprehensive plan of action to maintain constant security of the university.”

About 100,000 people have been killed since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2009.

Most of the attacks happened in three north-eastern states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. (TV360 Nigeria)
