The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service yesterday said there has been an influx of deadly expired rice smuggled into the country via land borders.

The Area Controller of the command, Emmanuel Udo-Aka, who made the assertion at a press briefing in Ibadan yesterday, said the expired products were taken to the country every day, adding that its consumption was dangerous to health.

He said he had investigated most of the goods, especially frozen foods and rice, and discovered they were expired. He added that most of the rice packages had lasted for four years before they were repacked, with the expiring dates changed and sent to Nigeria.

“Nigerians need to beware and patronise our local products,” he said. (Daily Trust)
