A Lagos based group, Save Lagos Group (SLG) has urged the state Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, to ensure the immediate release of the two principals and six Senior Secondary School students of Lagos State Model College, Igbonla in the Epe area of the state or resign with immediate effect.
The group condemned the state government for what it described as “its lackadaisical attitude to the security of the citizen of the state, particularly, the pupils and students of both primary and post-primary schools across the state.”
It also urged Governor Ambode to resign his position as the state helmsman, if as Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the state, he cannot protect the lives and property of the citizenry as stipulated in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. A statement signed by the group’s Convener, Comrade Adeniyi, Alimi Sulaiman, added that the incessant kidnapping of school children in the state has become alarming.
Sulaiman saluted the courage of the affected parents of the kidnapped children for refusing to pay any ransom to the kidnappers, stressing that the mindboggling incident occurred as a result of the failure of the state government in the area of security despite the acclaimed huge funds being spent on the security of the state through special intervention funds tagged Security Trust Fund (STF).
The group also sympathised with the parents and families of the abducted school children, advising them to have faith in God and that their children would soon be released to them unconditionally.
The group recalled that kidnappers had earlier in October last year kidnapped four students and two staff of the same school who were later released.
