Yet-to-be identified gunmen shot and killed a police sergeant on guard duty in the front of the station even as the slain policeman was left to his fate by his colleagues who ran for cover.

Asinim Butswat, a DSP, Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, confirmed the incident on Monday. He said the police had launched a manhunt for the killers.

“The policeman was killed on Sunday at about 8:30 p.m. in front of the Sagabma Police Station by two unknown gunmen on an unregistered motorcycle.

“We are working to establish the motive behind the dastardly act because they didn't stop. We recovered the rifle of the dead policeman.

“They shot at the policemen and zoomed off but we have swung into action and some people have volunteered useful information.”

It was learnt that the incident, which occurred about 8:30pm on Sunday, threw the entire policemen at the station into confusion.

The slain police sergeant was reportedly gunned down by the hoodlums who allegedly rode across the station near a main road on a get-away motorcycle.

Residents near the police station told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the gunmen numbering two escaped before the policemen at the station could recover from the confusion triggered by the unexpected attack.

The residents who witnessed the incident claimed that the fleeing gunmen shot at a group of policemen in front of the station with a pump action gun, hit the sergeant killing him on the spot.

They berated the poor response of the police wondering why the colleagues of the deceased policeman could not go after the gunmen.
