The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Women Wing, Worldwide, The Authority Newspapers and My Child My Care Foundation have concluded plans to celebrate the good works and pet projects of the five South-East Governors wives.
The event which is slated to hold on May, 25, 2017 is in appreciation of the first ladies’ activities aimed at assisting the poor and other deprived people in the rural areas across the South-East region.
According to a statement jointly signed by Sir Emeka Ejide, CEO, My Child My Care, Chief Mrs. (Hon) Calista Adimmachukwu, Woman Leader, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Women’s Wing and Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Editor, South-East, The AUTHORITY Newspapers on behalf of the Authority Managing Director, Madu Onuorah, and made available to Journalists in Awka, Sunday, wives of the five South East Governors will be honoured at the event.
The statement reads in part: “Constitutionally there are no roles for the wives of our Governors elected with constitutional roles but some of them have proved that behind every successful man is a real woman.
“They started pet projects in support of their husbands and indeed have done noble through the projects.
“But, many achievements of the offices of these First Ladies are either under reported or not even known sequel to the attitude and ego trip of some officials expected to handle the public. They hoard information from the media and prevent genuine efforts to showcase such activities but a new Sheriff is in town to assist mobilise awareness and appreciation for these efforts of our Governors wives in support of their husbands starting from the South East.
“Despite the challenges of confirming field reports from the some of the offices of the First Ladies during the Peer Review, our first ladies activities and interventions must be appreciated and recognised for the impacts in our communities with an award by Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Women’s Wing, My Child, My Care Foundation and The Authority Newspapers.
“During the field work and assessment much were observed and much said about these pet projects and we realised that many activities and interventions of First Ladies are grossly unknown and unreported.
“The major reason the partners desire to tell the world the many activities of the wives of the Governors in the five states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo.
“The Abia State First Lady, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, got the attention of the partnering bodies because of her pet project.
“Vicar Hope Foundation has offered its services in efforts to stem new infections as more and more children reach adolescence and sexual maturity.
“It also extends its services in providing succor in different ailments such as Sickle Cell, HIV/AIDS, Hypertension, Cancer and Diabetes. Vicar Hope Foundation runs a special scholarship programme designed to put gifted indigent children through school. It also initiated what is called Silver Cloud which is designed to give attention to the physically and mentally challenged.
“VHF and its founder have facilitated the distribution of delivery packs and food supplements to expectant mothers as well as new mothers. A state wide child de-worming exercise was held in schools across the state. It also provided housing scheme for indigent persons.
“VHF with the assistance of public spirited Abians has put in place a mechanism for the delivery of modern three-bedroom bungalows to these widows.
“The First Lady of Anambra State, Chief Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano, has also used her pet project, “Caring Family Enhancement Initiative” (CAFÉ), to complement the efforts of her husband, Chief Willie Obiano in the governance of Anambra State.
“Her pet project was an articulated response to the outcry of the forgotten members of the society.
“Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE) is a non-governmental organisation which is non ethnic, non religious and non partisan. Its resolve is the provision of humanitarian and charitable services for Ndi Anambra.”
Furthermore, the statement read: “The major aims of the organisation are to pursue, promote, and propagate the welfare and safety of the citizens based on principles of equity, justice and fairness in other foster socio-political and economic development of the state.
“CAFÉ, which was instituted by her Excellency Chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano, has the mandate to care for the less privileged and reduce women-child vulnerability while maintaining the dignity of physically challenged people in Anambra State.
The statement explained that the selection of Mrs. Obiano was based on her pet project which galvanizes support and resources for the upliftment of orphans, vulnerable children and the physically challenged.
It added that CAFE attends to both skilled and non skilled persons as well as indigent rural women in the 177 communities of the state.
“Mrs. Obiano CAFE has embarked on charitable works for the less privileged children in our society and supports existing reputable charity organisations.
“She has reduced the vulnerability of women and youths poverty level to the barest minimum. Through CAFÉ, she has also catered for the poor, physically challenged and deprived aged women in the society; promoted and improved on the welfare of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged groups in the society, including the disabled, the destitute, the aged and children.
“CAFÉ has also initiated, organised, supervised and assisted women and youths in various vocational training and skill acquisition; reduced the high rate of abandoned babies through symposia for pregnant women and established orphanages, welfare schemes and assisted in the development of health centers across Anambra State.
“It has provided artificial limbs and arms free to over 200 beneficiaries. The wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Rachael Umahi, is also recognised for her many good initiatives in Ebonyi State, where she set up the “Family Succor and Upliftment Programme (FSUP).
“The Ebonyi State government through Family Succor and Upliftment Programme (FSUP) has granted automatic employment to many indigent citizens from across the state.
“Through the project, she has distributed well over 400 wheel chairs to disabled persons,” the statement read.
