Senator Iyabo Obasanjo is under pressure to go to court in a bid to save her father’s face over the public ridicule to which she exposed him via her explosive 11-page open letter dated December 16, 2013.

Iyabo had in the letter accused her father, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, of being a liar, manipulator, wife-basher and hypocrite who was desperate for a third term despite his denials to the contrary.

The letter, exclusively obtained by Vanguard newspaper, has dominated national discourse since its publication on Wednesday morning.

Iyabo, currently based in Masachusetts, USA, has so far resisted family pressure to disown the letter but it is not clear for how much longer she can hold on.

Chief Obasanjo in his first formal reaction to the letter indicated he was convinced that Iyabo, his first child and favourite, would eventually deny the letter and sue Vanguard over it. In a brief and hot-tempered phone encounter after the publication of the letter, Obasanjo had threatened Vanguard that Iyabo would “finish” the paper in court. “You are a bloody idiot,” he said, as reported by Vanguard  . . . you are an idiot, don’t call me again. When Iyabo finishes you in court….,” the retired army general said before hanging up.

Iyabo has disclosed that she decided to write the open letter to her father because she had given up on him ever changing from his old ways.
