Journalists on the staff of Radio Bayelsa on Tuesday embarked on a procession round the state capital Yenagoa to protest the killing of their colleague, Mr Famous Giobaro.
The procession led by the Director of News and Current Affairs of the station, Timiebi Sammy Ebiye, urged the state police command to fish out the killers of the journalist.
Many of the staff wept uncontrollably, carrying placards with various inscriptions such as, “Why kill a Journalist?”, “Police, Fish out Famous Killers”, “Government ensure security in the state”, and “We are mourning”, among others.
The first port of call was the premises of NTA Yenagoa, where the Director of News and Current Affairs, Mrs. Timi Sammy Ebiye, described the killing as wicked. She expressed worry with the state of insecurity in Yenagoa and charged the police to begin investigation into the matter.
The General Manager of Radio Bayelsa, Mr. John Idumange, who was part of the procession, said the management and staff were still in shock over the death of one of its dedicated editors.
Idumange, who assured that the management would improve on the security system in the station, urged staff to come up with useful information that will help police unmask those behind the evil act.
The State Chairman of RATTAWU, Mr David Emiebor, expressed the condolences of the union to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) over the untimely death of Giobaro and called on police to unravel those behind the dastardly act.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Asinim Butswart, had earlier assured that the police command had commenced investigation into the killing.
