The Nigerian Senate has mandated its Committee on Federal Character to look into the newly introduced policy by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) which makes it mandatory for vehicle owners to install a speed limiting device on their vehicles and report back to the Senate.

This followed a point of order raised by Senator Dino Melaye, who explained that the policy is draconian and misplaced.

He informed the Senate that instead of compelling vehicle owners to install the speed limit device, “the Road Safety ought to have installed speed limit sign post on federal high ways and then apprehend and book any driver who disobeys the indicated instructions as written on the signposts.”

The Senate however referred the matter to its committee without debating the issue. The committee is expected to engage with the FRSC on the viability or otherwise of the policy.
