A woman (names withheld) in her late 40s yesterday escaped death by whiskers as the car she was driving; a brand new Volvo CX90 with registration number, AGL 848 EM, skidded off the Enugu/Onitsha expressway and fell into the three-feet-deep gutter that divides the road.
The accident, which happened in the afternoon, got motorcycle riders and passersby running to the spot expecting that the worse could have happened, only to see the woman crawling out of the car through the boot.
According to an eye witness, Emmanuel Okigbo, the woman was on high speed coming down from the fly over bridge when suddenly the car swerved and started falling down electric street lights and then ended up in the gutter.
Speaking to News Express, an official of the Nigeria Civil Defence, Mrs. Uche Okafor, who led a team that arrived the scene of the accident, said that when they got there, the woman was still trapped in the car but they rescued her through the boot.
“I think the woman had no injury because she was on seat belt. Immediately the car somersaulted and fell inside the gutter, the woman said she hanged by the seat belt and had to force it open and crawled towards the boot where she started hitting on it until people around jumped to open the boot of the car.
“We arrived here while she was coming out of the boot of the car and one of our male officers jumped into the gutter to help her out. A look at her, we noticed she was not bruised so they took her inside the LG mall where she sat down and then called her husband.”
The woman was thereafter taken in a Civil Defence ambulance to Amaku General Hospital for a proper medical check. However, the husband, who was at the scene of the crash refused to talk to News Express, saying, “Not now” even as he continued taking pictures of the car.
