The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has set machineries in place to shut down the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) over what it sees as anti-student policies initiated by the school authorities.
A statement issued on Monday by the university’s chapter of NANS, signed by its Ogun JCC Chairman, Com. Isaac Odiase, and General Secretary, Adeola Damilola, accused the management of the university of turning the university to a money making organization.
“The initiation of ill policies by the management will not in any way be tolerated by the leadership of NANS Ogun JCC,” the students said.
The statement listed some of the policies to include “the back door purchase of six vehicles for the sum of 96million naira for some members of the management; No Tax Clearance Certificate no exams ill policy; N20,000 for late submission of green file; as well as Two carryovers, no Teaching Practice.”
They demanded that the management should with immediate effects allow all students write the ongoing exams; that a make-up exam be arranged for students that have already missed some papers; that the management should immediately call for a round table discussion between themselves and the leaders of the Students Union Government.
The students further threatened that “failure to fulfil all of the above stated demands within 48 hours the leadership of NANS Ogun JCC shall mobilise and visit you (the management) in thousands.”
It also went ahead to demand “proper funding of education by at least 26% of budget by the state government,” claiming to be aware of various threats coming from the university management to the students leaders.
“We hereby put a clarion call to all the appropriate… to warn the Vice Chancellor and the management that a threat to any student in Ogun State is a threat to all.
“We are also much aware that the Vice Chancellor uses soldiers under the code, OP MESSA to militarise the campus in order to intimidate protesters.”
