Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) Friday, formally admitted 5, 615 as fresh undergraduates into the 25 years old specialised agricultural institution.
Vice Chancellor of MOUAU, Prof. Francis Otunta, said 18,904 students applied for admission in to the school.
He, therefore, admonished the lucky students to take their studies seriously and abide by the rules and regulations of the school.
“An average university is a knowledge industry that transforms insipid people into jewels found worthy in character and learning,” according to specifications, Otunta told the students, adding, “that is the reason this university has zero tolerance for cult activities and other anti-social behaviours.”
He urged the new entrants to face their studies squarely in order to make their parents proud. He said they can do this by choosing friends who are not wayward or indulge in deviant behaviours since they were in the school to be prepared for future challenges.
“You are not just here to be prepared as employable entities after graduation but for the inculcation of fundamental values which make for good citizenship,” he said.
The Vice chancellor also charged the students, especially the female, to abide by the dress code of the school to avoid incidences of rape, promising that his vision was to make the university “an educational institution of choice for nurturing professionals fit for the world of work and to make it a model University of Agriculture which ranks among the best in the world and is responsive to the creative and innovative abilities of the Nigerian people in food and fibre production.”
Highlight of the ceremony was raking of the matriculation oath by the new students.
