Leaders of the Niger Delta region have called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to deviate from the tradition of appointing the most senior justice at the Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The leaders including; Chief Edwin Clark and Chief Raymond Dokpesi made the appeal at the weekend under the umbrella of Pan Niger Delta Forum.

Members of the forum who met at Chief Clark’s residence in Abuja Saturday night urged Buhari to confirm Justice Walter Onnoghen as the substantive CJN.

According to them this was the first time the most senior justice at the apex court was being made to act in that capacity.

While declaring open the meeting, Clark, said the non-confirmation of the acting CJN could mean bad treatment was being extended to those who hail from the Niger Delta by the government.

“I want to appeal to the government and President Buhari to consider the appointment of the acting CJN as the substantive CJN in the interest of peace, and as the normal thing being done which is the tradition in the judiciary,” he said.

Present at the meeting were a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Victor Attah, Edwin Osuhor, Daniel Usigoh, Mac Emakpoye, Agbedi Fred, Senator Rowland Owie, Alaowe Bozimo and Dr. Alfred Mulade. (Daily Trust)
