Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged the newly sworn-in Local Government Chairmen, their deputies and councillors to provide good leadership and efficient administration to facilitate the flow of dividends of democracy to the grassroots.

The party said the new council administrators could achieve this feat by being very ingenuous and resourceful in managing the affairs of their respective councils, “especially now that Nigeria is challenged by economic depression.”

Abia PDP Chairman, Chief Johnson Onuigbo, who gave the charge in a congratulatory message to the victors who won all the 17 chairmanship seats and the 292 councillorship positions shortly after their swearing in, warned them that the party would strictly monitor their performance.

The congratulatory message which was signed by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Sir Don Ubani, attributed the 100 per cent victory recorded by the PDP in the just concluded Local Government election to the effective performance of the state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, as well as the strenuous efforts made by the party and the candidates to ensure victory at the polls.

“The Chairman of the PDP, Chief Johnson Onuigbo, has congratulated the newly sworn-in Local Government Chairmen, their deputies and councillors.

“Onuigbo pointed out that the victory of the Chairmen, their deputies and councillors, did not take any right thinking Abian by surprise because the victors who are all members of the PDP and the party itself had worked relentlessly and assiduously all through the period of campaign in order to reassure and convince the electorate that the party would always have them at heart,” the statement stressed.

Onuigbo praised the state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, saying he laid a solid foundation through the good quality services he was rendering to the people which made it easy for the candidates of PDP to have won all the 17 council chairmanship seats and the 292 councillorship positions in the state.

He called on them to tow the footsteps of the state Governor by deepening democracy through good deeds and responsiveness.

The PDP boss urged them to work in harmony and carry every segment of their respective councils along in equity, transparency and accountability as “Local Government administration is the real grassroots administration.”

Onuigbo emphasised the importance of allowing the flow of dividends of democracy to the electorate and warned that the party would monitor the performance of each council administration appropriately for record purposes.
