The Anambra State Police Command yesterday arrested a traditional ruler and two others in the state for the destruction of a police post built by another community in Anambra East council area.
Last weekend the traditional ruler of Mkpunando in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Alex Edozieuno petitioned the State Governor Chief Willie Obiano and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Okaula to rescue them in the hands of Aguleri-Otu community, who he alleged had threatened their lives.
In the petition, the monarch alleged that 15 persons had last week invaded his community and demolished a police station being built for the police by the community.
His petition reads: “Sir, it’s with heavy heart and helplessness that I and on behalf of the entire Mkpunando Community write this petition to you, to urgently come to our aid before the newly recognised tyrant H.R.H. Emmanuel Obiora drags us into anarchy.
“H.R.H. Emmanuel Obiora of Enugu-Otu during his inauguration speech in the presence of loyalists in his community vowed publicly to deal ruthlessly with me and my community Mkpunando.
“His ambition is to bring the two communities under his rulership. Less than a week after his recognition and the threat to my life and property of Mkpunando community, he ordered his thugs to demolish the almost completed Police Station in my community, Mkpunando.
“While this wanton destruction was going on, I called the Divisional Police Officer to inform him and he promised to send his men.
“The D.P.O, however later called to tell me that he had been told that the thugs were heavily armed and asked me to come to his station instead. At the station he now advised me to report to the Commissioner of Police himself which I did and the Commissioner asked me to put it in writing.
“My life and those of my subject are in serious danger; we therefore pray and call on your Excellency to come to our aid as soon as possible. Some teachers in my community have started running away to save their dear lives from impending danger.”
Although the state Police Command through its Police Public Relations Officer, Princess Nkeiruka Nwode, did not confirm the arrest of the monarch, it confirmed arrest of some persons, it was gathered that one of the three persons arrested was a monarch.
Nwode said investigations were in top gear adding that two or three persons have been arrested over the matter.
She noted that reliable information has been gathered on those behind such dastardly act.
“You should know this is a case of arson and what was involved was government property, we are not leaving anything to chance to unraveling the cause of the incident, she said.
Nwode, called on the people of the community to remain calm, saying that as soon as investigations were concluded, those arrested would be charged to court.
She further pleaded that what the police needed from the people of the area was adequate information that could lead to the arrest of all the culprits.
