A socio-political transparency advocacy group known as Renascent Anambra Transparency Democratic League (RATDL) has raised the alarm on the plans by some opposition politicians to pull the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, into the recent sex scandal involving the 2015 dethroned beauty queen, Miss Chidinma Okeke.
In a statement made available to journalists in Awka and signed by its Coordinator, Comrade Chuma Nweke, RATDL stated that the former beauty queen has allegedly been approached by some opposition politicians in the state to indict Obiano in the scandal.
The statement reads thus: “We learnt that the basic idea by the faceless sponsors of the plan is to get the former beauty queen to make brazen allegations linking the governor and his top aides to the scandal, thereby giving the opposition reason to shout to the rooftop, and request the governor to step down from seeking second term in office.
“We shall not stand by and watch unscrupulous politicians succeed in their nefarious attempt to scandalise the office of the Governor of Anambra State, by roping the governor into a matter which he has absolutely no hand in.
“We shall do anything within our power to ensure that people who are bent on humiliating our Governor do not go unscathed.
“We decided to come out to speak having seen how some enemies of the Governor were trying to twist the scandal against him, and to also alert the Governor of what his enemies are trying to do, so he can prepare himself.
“We are compelled to speak after noticing the dangerous emerging trend in Anambra politics, which have hitherto been known to be peaceful.”
Nweke further said that it has become necessary to go public following the spate of misleading public commentaries and allegations which have the lining of rupturing the peace that exists in the state in a time of national hardship occasioned by economic recession.
While calling on the security agencies to make haste and make its findings public to save those who are being unjustly accused, and also save the state from the hands of pranksters, the group also stressed that since the law enforcement agents have wadded into the matter, it would be fair for all parties to desist from making unguarded utterances.
Meanwhile, counsel to the former Beauty Queen, Ikenna Obidiegwu in a telephone chat said, “There is nothing political about Chidinma’s travails, the little girl has told the world how it happened, and what our concern is, is to ensure that she gets justice.
“No opposition politician has approached my client to twist facts, and government was not the organisers of the pageant, and as such has no link to it.”
He however, urged Anambra State government to institute a commission of enquiry into the matter as failure to do so may indict her of complicity or better still rob off on her when the whole truth is unraveled.
