The Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, has vowed to deal with tax defaulters by invoking necessary laws to compel them to spread the dividends of democracy to the people.
The Governor gave the warning while swearing in the members of the transition implementation committees across the 16 local governments in the state.
He said that the government was aware of the failure of groups, corporate bodies and some individuals who refused to pay tax.
He added that just as the welfare of the citizens is obligatory on government, payment of tax is also compulsory on the citizens and the people cannot expect to benefit from the services being provided by government and yet refuse to pay tax.
Government, he said, will not hesitate to invoke the law to compel the defaulters to pay.
“I am aware that several groups and individuals, especially those at the formal sector, are yet to conform with our reforms by paying taxes.
“Let me make this very clear, just as the welfare of the citizens is obligatory on governments, payment of tax is compulsory on all eligible individuals in the state.
“You cannot expect to benefit from the services provided by government from taxes, yet refuse to contribute by paying your tax.
“Government will not hesitate to invoke the law to punish those found guilty of tax avoidance and evasion,” he emphasised. (Channels TV)
